The Bollinger County Democratic Club met at the Woodland Steakhouse in Marble Hill on April 7th. President Dennis Brown opened the meeting at approximately 7:00 pm and turned the floor over to Michael Winder.
Winder who is a candidate for state representative in the 156 district stated that Republicans have said that they have not raised state taxes but emphasized that while they have not raised state taxes , the financial burden has been shifted to the county , municipal and fire districts.
Winder also raised questions about the fact that House Speaker Rod Jetton had campaigned on fixing Missouri highways, but has done little to fix the roads in Missouri’s 156 district, a fact that Winder said he finds ironic given that House Speaker Jetton is the 3’rd most powerful man in Missouri and every piece of legislation that is introduced has to pass through him.
Mr. Winder then stated that if elected, he would not spend money on county satellite offices, electing instead to utilize county courthouses when touring the district, which would save the state money, before closing his speech he stated, “I want to make one thing clear, I am against gun control”, and concluded by stating that he is pro-gun and pro-life.
During the course of the meeting the Bollinger County Democratic Club agreed to plan future events throughout the county including holding events at Patton, Sedgewicksville and Grassy.
The club elected not to endorse a presidential candidate at this time, deciding instead to let the presidential primary run its course.
Clint Lacy addressed the crowd briefly stating that there was a new book out entitled, “Whistling Past Dixie. Do Democrats Need the South?” he stated that the author Tom Shaller writes that the Democrats can win national elections without the South.
Lacy said that it was this attitude by Democrats at the national level that are hurting Democrats at the local level. He then suggested that members of the club check out “Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America”, by U.S. Senator Jim Webb.
Lacy noted that in the book, Webb spoke openly about his Confederate ancestors, yet in 2006 defeated Republican incumbent George Allen and that it is proof that the Democratic Party needs to return back to its Jacksonian / Populist roots.
A motion to adjourn the meeting was made slightly past 8:00 and was seconded, thus concluding the April 8th, meeting.
The next meeting will be on May 5th in Patton at 6:30 pm. Place will be announced latter!
(Thanks to Clint, for taking notes and sharing with us this update of the meeting)
